To be prepared for the future, KeyGene is building both knowledge and tools to create the capability to enhance desired traits in plants. Examples of this are the enlargement of the amount of health stimulating ingredients and the development of broad resistances against diseases and pests.
‘Gene Exploitation’, is all about the use of genes, both plant genes as well as foreign genes. When the relationship between a certain gene and a trait is known, it is then possible to develop new varieties via genetic alterations and modifications. KeyGene does not apply GMO technologies at the moment, but might do so when the added value of genetic modification is more generally appreciated by consumers. That is why KeyGene is investing in knowledge on genes with an added value in order to improve future varieties through our Allele Surgery Program.
